I am Canadian. Not a phrase a Canadian would have shouted from a mountain top years ago – a Canadian would put a wee flag on their backpack, or commit to a tiny red leaf tattoo in some discrete place covered 10 months of the year.
Something has changed in our country’s DNA, and I think it began at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Its gained steady momentum in the stark contrast to unsteady world politics.
We are still polite, apologetic, and know how to laugh at ourselves – and this is where I come in. We are now LOUD and PROUD when asked where we are from. “I am Canadian”. Globally, saying you are Canadian often grants you a warm smile, a trusting gaze and almost always a story of an experience they had with a Canadian in the past.
I am proud of that, and of us.
Our country is a micro-version of the planet, a mix of everyone – every faith and every belief. AND…we all get along.
Welcome, to anyone visiting us for our celebration. We are happy you are here, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all the Canadians near and far.
