I Am Canadian.

Canadian Flag Canada 150 Grimm Inc. I am Canadian. Not a phrase a Canadian would have shouted from a mountain top years ago – a Canadian would put a wee flag on their backpack, or commit to a tiny red leaf tattoo in some discrete place covered 10 months of the year.

Something has changed in our country’s DNA, and I think it began at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Its gained steady momentum in the stark contrast to unsteady world politics.

We are still polite, apologetic, and know how to laugh at ourselves – and this is where I come in. We are now LOUD and PROUD when asked where we are from. “I am Canadian”. Globally, saying you are Canadian often grants you a warm smile, a trusting gaze and almost always a story of an experience they had with a Canadian in the past.Canada Canadian Canada 150

I am proud of that, and of us.

Our country is a micro-version of the planet, a mix of everyone – every faith and every belief. AND…we all get along.

Canadian Canada Canada 150 Maple LeafI think the world would benefit from taking a page from Canada’s playbook and READ the part about ‘plays nicely with others’.

Welcome, to anyone visiting us for our celebration. We are happy you are here, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all the Canadians near and far.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Toronto Gift Fair 2017 GrimmThe Toronto Gift Fair ended  a few weeks ago and we are still catching our breath. Half of the orders written came from brand new accounts. Having lots of new designs and new products kept our Grimm booth filled with customers.

Coir Doormats GrimmOne of the new products we introduced were coir doormats.  People fell in love with the quality and the designs,10 designs were introduced. Can we say HUGE SUCCESS!!! We’ll be adding many more designs for the next show in August of this year.

Canada 150 Grimm T ShirtsThe other notable item that kept the booth buzzing was a Canada 150 design to celebrate Canada’s big birthday this year.  We offered it on a red and ash t-shirt, a red apron, magnets and coaster sets. We’re thrilled on how well received the design was. You can CLICK HERE to grab your very own Canada 150 themed item!

The world is feeling a tad cookoo right now, which makes us even more proud and grateful to be Canadian, that feeling gets put into designs.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Ileana Grimm Las Vegas Licensing Expo This June, Grimm heads back to Las Vegas for the 39th time. Yes, you read that correctly, 39 TIMES! Years ago, we exhibited twice a year at M.A.G.I.C  (men’s apparel guild in California)  which can rack  your trips up to the desert pretty fast. A few years later, the Licensing Expo made the switch from New York to Vegas and so my visits have continued.

I am a firm believer that a change is (almost) as good as a rest, so even though this is business travel, it will be packed a lot of spontaneous fun. Before that can happen, I need to plan my booth for the licensing show. Booth designs for gift show layouts are almost effortless in comparison to the torture I put myself through, over-thinking the booth for the licensing show.  I am the queen of over-thinking to begin with, so planning layout of the licensing booth feels like the Olympics. Las Vegas Sign In the end, it always works out and we have a great show. I have no doubt this June will be the same, but I still will wonder what art to display, which characters to show or introduce. Do I do a tease and create interest or do a full monty and leave nothing unseen. See, I told you, I over-think.

Once the booth is up and the show is successfully underway, then I can breathe, relax, enjoy sin city and the change of scenery. Las Vegas is an insane display of excess and, I think it’s hilarious that the only thing that is not super sized there is the welcome sign. Las  Vegas is a city everyone needs to see, I am just not sure you need to see it 39 times.

Laughter May Not Be The BEST Medicine But, It’s A Close Second.

April is Daffodil Month. This time a year ago, I was a few days away from my second chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Gulp. BIG GULP. If I wrote nothing else in this blog, that sentence would be enough. In preparation, I had already snipped my long hair and replaced it with a short sporty cut, reminiscent of my teens. In only days, that short hair would start to fall out in clumps like a husky shedding on a hot spring day. I think the shock of everything brought my partner and I to laughter more times than some would understand. It felt like the humour, or maybe the horror, of the situation crept up on you like uncontrollable giggles in church. The laughter was so cathartic it also brought us closer.

I remember being in the shower a year ago and calling my sweetheart to come to the bathroom. There on the floor of the shower were enough wavy locks to knit yourself a small pet. After a  few ridiculous days of doing my best Donald Trump impression, you know, not moving or touching my hair, I gave in and had my head shaved. Not surprisingly, we found a way to laugh through that too. And, as it turned out, I had a great bald head. Who knew.

Ileana Grimm Grimm Inc. Over the next year, I posted silly pictures and drew funny art in the hopes that it would let those close to me know I was ok, and maybe my art would get shared and make it’s way to someone in my situation, as well as help them smile for a moment. Of course, what I was/am going through was bound to show up in my artwork.

Today, a year later, I feel so grateful to be healthy and happy. I am so blessed to see life as a glass half full and have a career in art, but there are no words that can say how I feel when I make some laugh with my art, and for a nanosecond, they get to leave reality in the dust.

This is a something I created during that time.  Please visit grimm.ca to see much more.

It is March 23rd and I’m eagerly waiting  for the month to leave like a lamb, given it came in like a lion. However, over the next two days, the forecast has us getting a Vegas style buffet of precipitation. Ice, snow, rain, kitchen knives and who knows what else, is coming our way.
In preparation, I will organize the appropriate weapons to fight this on-slot: broom, shovel, salt, sand, cork screw and whatever wine is handy.

I make it a habit, or more of a way of being to not complain, especially about the weather. I am kind of excited to see what comes our nastiness comes our way. There is always something beautiful every day, every season, everywhere. Not to mention, I LOVE bad weather but I am  looking forward to riding my bike to the warehouse every day .

In Canada, there are many brave souls that are four season bikers. I am not one but I did manage to ride on two freakishly warm December days and two this March, but otherwise I am a 3 season gal and dry day kind of rider.

In the last group of designs I did for the January wholesale shows, not surprisingly, there was a bicycle t-shirt design in there. It’s not my typical pun or humour, nor does it even look like most of my artwork, but I think it turned out really great. It’s now one of
my favorite t-shirts (and I own a lot of t-shirts). To check it out, click HERE. Pop over to

Grimm comes out of the dark ages and steps into the new ages!

Ileana Grimm - Original Art - Living On The Edge Several months ago, we had to admit that our website was a dinosaur. Anyone that has built, or renovated a web site knows that  admitting you are living in the dark ages is the easiest part of all this. Next came the daunting task of deciding what needed to be changed and finding the right crew to help. I was all excited in the beginning and thought it would be this quick fix HOWEVER, nothing about this process is easy or quick. I won’t and can’t, get into the nitty gritty  of the whole process  (I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to technical stuff and doodled through most meetings). I am sooo excited that it’s done and ready to go for everyone to see. Did I mention I was excited it was done?

A part of our web site will be this blog. That is where I come in. So cool that I can  post thoughts, sketches and new designs as they happen. I am a virgin blogger but I think this will be a lot of fun. I encourage your comments and feedback and promise future blogs will have a little more grunt to them than this one.

Stay tuned for a lot more!
